Lives there a man or woman who hasn’t dreamed of driving a BMW?
We at Automobile Journal have our favorites, too. One of us owns 3 Series, another craves the big 7 Series. And me? I have a 2005 Mini Cooper Convertible, which you will never, ever get me to give up, short of death.
But it happens that I also love the 6 Series models too. So you can imagine my–and our whole staff’s joy–at word that a new 6 Series Coupe was introduced at the recent Auto Shanghai show in China.
The styling of the previous series was a matter of some discussion among auto lovers and writers alike, with some of us (me included) loving the robust, sensual look of the 6 Series. Others weren’t so crazy about it and thought that it needed a redo. Well, the new one is likely to have a more universal reaction: Sweet.
The new model looks lower, sleeker, and more powerful than its predecessor, and also appears more energetic, muscled and athletic as well.
You’ll find the usual assortment of features on the hew one including Adaptive LED headlights, a powerful Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound system and a new generatoin BMW Head-Up Display, an interior design exclusive to the 6 Series, and of course, blistering yet well-mannered performance.
We’ve not yet been able to find a press kit for the 6 Series Coupe, but a look at the one for the 6 Series Convertible gives lots of clues as to what we are likely to find in the Coupe model.
We expect power to come from a V-8 engine with direct injection and turbocharging. The 4.4-liter V-8 engine has 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm, and makes peak torque of 450 lb-ft between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm (preliminary).
“ This unique “reverse-flow” engine, whose turbochargers are positioned in the V-area between the cylinder banks, produces an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it an energetic delight for the enthusiast driver,” BMW says.
We expect to see, for instance, the 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission that comes with the convertible model, which includes a manual shifting function. Paddle shifting will be included, we suspect with the coupe. There should be a brake energy regeneration feature, as well as something that BMW is calling Integral Active Steering, offered as an option as it is on the convertible. and there could also be an option called active roll stabilization, which reduces body roll in high speed cornering and when making sudden changes in direction while driving.
