INFINITI IPL G CONVERTIBLE CONCEPT

The 2011 New York Auto Show marks the regional debut of the IPL G37 Convertible Concept. Although the Infiniti Performance Line G37 Coupe has been available since last December with a base price of $48,900, the Convertible Concept still isn’t confirmed for production. Don’t be surprised, however, if it goes into production before the end of 2012. Convertible models generally follow coupes by about a year, so we can expect a production version to be shown this fall, perhaps at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
If you’re not familiar with IPL, it’s essentially Infiniti’s version of parent company Nissan’s Nismo division. We expect that when the IPL G Convertible Concept goes to production, it will simply be an open-top version of the IPL Coupe. The IPL G37 Coupe has its stock 3.7-liter dohc 24-valve V-6 power increased by 18 horsepower to 348, and its torque is increased to 276 lb.-ft. These are, unsurprisingly, nearly identical numbers to those posted by the Nismo 370Z.

Transmission options will be the same with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic, which has paddle shifters. Suspension is tuned by IPL with roughly 20 percent stiffer springs in front and 10 percent stiffer in back. Although the IPL G37 is sporting, it’s stuill not a track car. The suspension will offer better stability, but without sacrificing ride quality too much. The IPL’s big Brembo brakes feature 4-piston fronts with 14.0-in. rotors, and 2-piston rears with 13.8-in. rotors.
The bodywork is changed to reflect the sportier nature of the IPL G37. Changes include new front and rear fascia, plus the car rolls on 19-in. IPL-specific wheels. Expect the IPL G37 Convertible to be sold as a 2012 model, priced commensurately higher than the IPL G37 Coupe. We see it selling in the $55,000 to $60,000 range.
